2. Results and Report

The results provided by DIRECT calculation module have to be interpreted carefully, as the accuracy is very dependant to the quality of the weight and cost inventory that has been entered. Results comprise financial (cost based metrics) as follows:

  • True cost of waste ($): the true cost of waste measures combined food production input waste costs, associated business costs and waste management costs. This value is indicative so that any changes to the one element to save on costs to the system may require other cost bases to be altered, and as such would not generally lead to a direct cost saving.
  • Annual waste removal cost ($): the annual cost of waste management.
  • Energy spend as % of operating costs (%, $/$): cost of electricity and natural gas inputs compared with all operating costs (materials, energy, labour and overheads).
  • Material spend as % of annual operating cost (%, $/$): cost of food and packaging inputs compared with all operating costs (materials, energy, labour and overheads).
  • Purchase to disposal ratio (%, $/$): ratio of costs of disposal to purchase costs. This is the inverse of purchase to disposal ratio.
  • Purchase to estimated true cost of waste ratio (%, $/$): estimated true cost of waste to cost of material purchase inputs (packaging and food). This is the inverse of purchase ratio to true cost of waste.

Results also comprise production (mass based metrics) as follows:

  • Utilised input to gross product ratio (%, kg/kg): this measures the efficiency of food production from all inputs to finished product by weight.
  •  Stock holding to gross product ratio (%, kg/kg): this indicates the inventory held above required production inputs by weight.
  • Food waste to solid waste output ratio (%, kg/kg): this measures organic production waste compared to all solid waste outputs of the factory by weight.
  • Avoidable food waste to inputs ratio (%, kg/kg): this measures organic production waste that is avoidable compared to all production inputs by weight.
  • Avoidable food waste to solid waste ratio (%, kg/kg): this measures organic production waste that is avoidable compared to all organic production waste by weight.
  • Solid waste output to material input (excluding water) ratio (%, kg/kg): this measures all solid waste compared to all solid production inputs by weight.
  • Packaging waste output to food input ratio (%, kg/kg): this measures the input packaging to product ratio by by weight.
  • Output packaging to gross product ratio (%, kg/kg): this measures the output packaging to product ratio by weight.

At the end of the DIRECT calculation module process, you will be able to save the assessment that you have just completed. A PDF report will be created, presenting the following information:

  • The name of your assessment, the time period it is relevant to, and the date when it was completed.
  • The results of the assessment: charts and tables of cost and production (weight) indicators.
